There’s something magical about the bond between a child and a pet. Whether it's the comfort of a loyal pup, the silly antics of a cat, or the joy of caring for a hamster, animals have a unique way of helping kids grow—emotionally, socially, and even creatively.
As a children’s author and proud dog mom to Hugo, I see this connection every day. Hugo isn’t just my writing buddy—he’s also a source of calm, laughter, and inspiration. Pets like him offer children valuable life lessons that last well beyond puppyhood.
1. They Teach Empathy and Responsibility
Feeding, walking, brushing—simple acts of care teach kids to think beyond themselves. Hugo’s gentle nature has helped the children in my life learn how to respond with kindness and notice non-verbal cues, like when he needs rest or wants to play.
2. They Help Kids Regulate Emotions
When emotions run high, a pet’s steady presence can be grounding. Stroking a dog’s fur or simply sitting beside a furry friend can help lower stress. Hugo often senses when someone’s having a tough day and offers a quiet nudge of support.
3. They Model Unconditional Love
A pet doesn’t care about test scores, popularity, or bad moods. That constant, unconditional love is especially powerful for kids navigating self-esteem or big life changes.
4. They Spark Creativity and Storytelling
Many children (and authors!) love including animals in their stories. Hugo has made his way into more than one of my drafts, helping me explore themes of friendship, loyalty, and adventure.
Looking to share more stories that reflect the bond between children and animals? Here are some of my favourite picture and chapter books about pets:
1. “Harry the Dirty Dog” by Gene Zion & Margaret Bloy Graham
A fun, classic story about a dog who runs away to avoid a bath—only to return so dirty that his family doesn’t recognize him. Great for early readers and dog lovers alike.
2. “The Pigeon Wants a Puppy!” by Mo Willems
Pigeon is back—and this time, he really wants a puppy. But when reality sets in, he’s not so sure. This silly story is a humorous way to explore what pet ownership really means.
3. “Officer Buckle and Gloria” by Peggy Rathmann
A charming story about a police officer and his dog Gloria, who perform safety speeches for kids. Their teamwork and bond teach lessons about confidence, friendship, and trust.
4. “Some Pets” by Angela DiTerlizzi & Brendan Wenzel
This playful book celebrates all kinds of pets—no matter how furry, feathery, or slithery. A perfect read-aloud for toddlers and preschoolers exploring diversity in the animal world.
5. “Socks” by Beverly Cleary
Told from a cat’s perspective, this chapter book follows Socks as he adjusts to a growing family. A great read for older kids learning about love, jealousy, and adapting to change.
Final Thoughts: Real-Life Pets and Storybook Friends
Whether it’s Hugo snoozing beside my writing desk or a fictional pup teaching life lessons on the page, pets remind us how to love, care, and be present. Their loyalty, warmth, and gentle spirit make them natural teachers—and unforgettable companions for kids.
